WE NEED YOUR CURRENT EMAIL ADDRESS

By: Julie Kolde, Webmaster

At each of the general meetings this year, you will have the opportunity to update and verify your email address. With information moving so quickly these days, we believe this is the most efficient way to update you of important legislative action that is needed, or inform you of updates to the web site. In addition, this will allow us to verify spellings and case-sensitive letter issues that may be present in the current address we have on file. PLEASE provide us with an email address that you know you check consistently and that you plan to have for the year. Thanks for cooperating and we'll see you at the registration tables!

OASN Report

By: Kathy O'Dell R.N.,M.Ed.,N.C.S.N. odellgw@wesnet.com

The OASN board met in Columbus on August 6, 2004 & is asking SWOSNA members how OASN can best meet the needs of school nurses in our region. Please share your thoughts with Kathy.

She would like to invite you to attend an OASN board meeting with her to see how your 'parent' organization functions. The next OASN board meeting is Nov. 1 in Columbus @ STRS. Another way SWOSNA members can 'get a feel' of how the OASN board functions is to participate in committee work. The following committees need members: Professional Issues (resolutions, position papers, issue briefs), Awards (Pat Baum Scholarship, School Nurse of the Year), & Newsletter (finding financial resources). Please consider taking a committee position to further acquaint yourself with the workings of OASN.

We need to begin thinking about making a nomination for School Nurse of the Year. The nominee needs to be involved in the nomination process due to the nature of the application.

SWOSNA is proud to again provide an Executive Director for OASN. Renee Besecker, retired school nurse from Northridge, assumed her duties @ the board meeting on August 6.

Put on your creative thinking caps & begin thinking about a basket for the OASN conference in March.

The conference will be in southeast Cleveland on March 25-27 & will meet the law requirement & child abuse requirement for license renewal & we will get 1/2 of our continuing nursing education units to renew our license! Let's have a stellar showing of attendees from SWOSNA!

OASN has hired a lobbyist to advise us as we pursue our legislative effort to mandate schools in Ohio to employ school nurses. We will be calling upon our SWOSNA membership to assist in this effort & hope you will 'rise to the occasion." More details will be provided in the OASN Newsletter by the OASN Legislative Chair, Mary Kiplinger.

OASN's Strategic Plan & revised by-laws are now on the OASN website www.oasn.org Please take a look at these as SWOSNA prepares to revise its by-laws. Your input is appreciated!

A new ODH document, "Guidelines for Measuring Heights & Weights & Calculation of Body Mass Index-for-Age in Ohio's Schools" was distributed @ the spring ODH workshops & will be distributed @ the New School Nurse Orientation Workshop in Sept. If you would like a copy email Dorothy Bystrom Dbystrom@gw.odh.state.oh.us It contains screening information, height/weight forms & a BMI wheel.

You can also subscribe to Dorothy's ezine by emailing her.

ODH is encouraging local health departments to have parents sign consent forms to release immunization information when signing the consent to give immunizations. This may help reduce the potential for having difficulty in obtaining immunization information, given the new HIPAA law.

Dorthy Bystrom, our school nurse consultant in ODH, has a new title, Health Planning Administrator. As such, ODH is hiring an additional School Nurse Consultant. We're glad to hear that Dorothy is getting additional help to do the many things she does so well.

An enormous THANK YOU to all SWOSNA members who helped in any way to make the NASN conference in Cincinnati in June the huge success that it was! State side conference co-chairs, Renee Besecker, Norma Nikkola & Kathy O'Dell have received numerous compliments from nurses throughout the nation who commented on 'Ohio Hospitality.' We may be giving the Southern Bells a run for their money!

OASN has some of their saleable items left over from the conference.  See or email Kathy O'Dell if you are interested in obtaining a Cherish the Children sweatshirt or apron or jewelry, Hug (the scented hot/cold pack) or wool Americana blankets. Kathy will have a limited supply @ the Sept. meeting so you will want to call or email her in advance to order a sweatshirt in the color & size of your request. She also has copies of the "Guide to School Nursing in Ohio" for sale.

Kathy's term as OASN Rep. will end this year & SWOSNA will be looking for nurses to run for this elected office. As you consider this position you may have questions & Kathy will be glad to answer them & mentor you. Please consider running for this position.
